The REFREY brand was founded in 1948 in Vigo, by the Freire family. The first intention of the company was to make a quality machine with a reasonable price at the time. This machine had
a great success in the market thanks to the good value for money. Over 10 years later REFREY started to manufacture industrial models, as the Spanish apparel industry was increasingly demanding this product.
Due to the opening of sewing machine importing in Europe, all the three Spanish sewing machine manufacturers underwent a crisis.
And so REFREY reach a big crisis in 1992, when Freire family made over the brand name and manufacturing rights to the workers.
They formed a Worker- Owned Company going on with their activities.
In 1996, REFREY is established as a joint stock company with stake holdings of the autonomy administration (Sodiga, at present named Xesgalicia). Being the only sewing machine manufacturer in Spain nowadays, and one of the few ones in the EU, with more than 100 workers.
At present, the company is working in two lines. On the one hand continues with the manufacturing of domestic, for both apparel and footwear
sewing machines, as well as special ones, such as the new models for canopies, and sail-making.
On the other hand it is carried out the tooling of precision parts for the car-making and related industries.
Next year 2004 REFREY reaches to its 55 anniversary being present not only in the Spanish but also in the international market.
